Jesus and waffles

We walked to church on Sunday.

This might sound charming. It may even conjure up images in your mind of our little family skipping down the streets of Manhattan singing all the way to church. That's the way it goes in my head, too. When I dream.

The reality was the air was a brisk 20 degrees and I couldn't feel my face by the time we stepped into church. Plus, the sibling bickering that happens in a car on the way to church totally still happens walking down the sidewalk. I'm guessing it would still happen if each child had their own unicorn to ride to church, too.

Church was great. It was peaceful and refreshing. Pastor Tim Keller gave an amazing message.

It was Jackson's first time there.
I asked him how he liked his class and he said, "I didn't hate it. Plus I actually learned stuff from the Bible at this church."
Not sure what book he learned from at other churches, but I'm making a mental note to start checking into that a bit more.

When we picked up Lily, her teacher said, "Lily was great today. She is so methodical."
Me: "Uhh....What?"
Teacher: "She's so disciplined."
To which Lily replied, "What's disciplined?"

First of all, I'm always shocked when Lily is able to pull this off with total strangers. How can she be so disciplined at church and not so disciplined at home? (Don't email and tell me the answer to this. I will be humiliated.) Second of all, the fact that she's not sure what the word disciplined means could be where some of our miscommunication stems from.

Do you know what we found after church?

A waffle truck. Yes. It is a truck that makes waffles. Hot, crispy, tasty waffles with all sorts of delicious toppings.

The truck moves around the city and tweets their location so you can find them. I have added them to my twitter list. Wouldn't you if you were here? Something about always knowing where I can find delicious Belgian waffles makes me warm inside. I'll let you know if this gets out of hand.

Everyone who reads this is going to be intensely jealous of your life! As if we didn't already have enough to envy... WAFFLE TRUCK??? Too good.

My husband is a theology blogger (hardwords.wordpress.com)and he greatly approves of Tim Keller. I love the fact that your son can already tell the difference between real Bible teaching and wishy-washy pseudo-Christian flim-flam. That discernment will serve him well in life.

I may have to suggest the idea of having a waffle truck outside our local church. People always go for breakfast after church – but with waffle truck, the breakfast comes to YOU.

I just recently found your blog. I envy your family being able to live in the city. My husband and I visited New York for the first time this summer and fell in love. Now that I know they have a waffle truck, well I don't think anything could stop me from coming back!
So glad you found a church!

My wife (Emily, who commented above) has been sharing your blog posts with me for a few days now - really enjoying them :) Glad you guys have found a great church - Redeemer is amazing.

Man, they didn't have a waffle truck when I lived in NYC. Times have changed...

As for the discipline at church or school and not at home, well, my youngest is a lot like that. A perfect angel at school and next to satanic at home. Supposedly, this is better than the other way around, but it's difficult to hear your child described in such a way...

Hello, I just flipped through your blog and enjoyed it. We just moved with our one year old from Boston to Hamburg, Germany, and your positive attitude in your blog reminded me to have fun discovering new things in a new place, and to embrace the challenges!

"the city streets will inspire you, the lights will make you feel brand new..."

Think of you guys everytime I hear that song! HAhaha thanks to DJ Mike playing the video while we all danced in his kitchen.

And a waffle truck to boot!

I think I may have gotten the words of the song backwards... but you get the idea...

Wow, those look amazing. Almost good enough to brave the cold to eat one. Almost. :) I really love your blog! I was at TM from 2001-2004 and worked a little with Rod when I was a staff associate. Ahhh, such a long time ago!

Wish there was a waffle truck outside our church! The local donut shop even closes on Sundays...

We've heard Tim Keller speak at our church here in Seattle (Mars Hill) and he's amazing. One of the best teachers I've ever listened to.

I'm still totally enjoying reading your blog as we take little steps towards both adopting a girl into our family of boys and moving to London!

I saw this waffle truck on Throw Down with Bobby Flay just last night and thought, "Hey wait a minute Michelle said they ate there the other day! It does exist!" AWESOME!

I saw it on the throwdown also - Michelle, you need to see that. It made me want a liege waffle - I had never heard of such a thing. So now when I go to NYC and chase that waffle truck, I will be so informed...
