Dear Target,

Dear Target,

I miss you.

I've tried to put you out of my mind since moving to Manhattan, but can not. After a relationship of over a decade, we were already in too deep. I was silly to think I could toss you aside like an old shoe and never think of you again.

I thought I wouldn't miss you, but I've come to see that my life is more difficult without you. My heart is heavy thinking about what you did for me during holidays. Not just Christmas, but Valentines, Easter, Thanksgiving...the list goes on and on. No one lays out aisles of needless holiday decor like you do. Only you can make a modern-day sophisticated woman think she needs a strand of blinking lights to match every holiday.

I've also heard you're carrying Liberty of London now. I've seen the commercials. I am positive I am missing out on something that would have changed my life.

And the dollar bins. O.How.I.Miss.The.Dollar.Bins. It was like digging for treasures. Sure, I didn't need anything in them, but you still filled a void I was sure I had at the time. Even my 6 year old understood the draw of the dollar bins. Of course they were conveniently placed near the entrance and were varying heights so kids her size could reach in. But I'm sure you did it that way for us, not so you could increase sales. You are self-less.

I miss just stopping by to see how you were doing. You were always available for the big events, but were just as available for those spare 10 minutes I often had on the way to pick up kids from school. You were always ready to accept me with open arms no matter how much time I had for you.

I just wanted you to know how I felt. Like I've lost a friend. You are missed.

Love,

Lonely in Manhattan

I can totally understand! I don't know how you're making it alone!

Have you tried the Target in Brooklyn? It is not quite the same as a suburban Target, but it IS a Target. I can't remember which you take, but it is on the 4,5,6 line making it perfect for the UES. (There is also on 225th in the Bronx.) I tried both during my time in New York and it made me feel like myself again... However, now I feel like I need to remember to fully appreciate living near a Target again.

4,5,6 to Atlantic Ave. I like that one better than the 225th Bronx one. Atlantic Ave doesn't require you to walk outside at all....um yes sometimes it's nice to be indoors.

I'm new to reading your blog - I love it btw! - but theres a Target in Queens also, on queens blvd, right off the R/V line its the Grand Ave stop - i don't know what i would do w/o it!

ummm no need for a pitty party there is a target in Brooklyn, and the Bronx, and Queens. The one in Brooklyn as others have mentioned is right off of the 4,5 train so super easy to get to. As all newyorkers know the city is made up of more boroughs than just Manhattan.

I hear ya! We have one somewhat nearby but since it's about 45 minutes away, I don't get to go very often. Before we lived here I worked right next door to Target and went whenever I felt like it. I miss it too. :)

I haven't been to the Target's you all have mentioned in the comments here. But I have heard many horror stories about them. They are definitely not the same as the ones I had in suburbia.

Oh you poor girl. I get a weekly Target fix. I have 2 close by that seem to carry different stuff. My fav store is totally over-shopped tho ---hard to find the good stuff. Have not seen any liberty of london yet.

I miss Target too! We live in Japan and while we love living here and have many nice local shops and even a Costco and Ikea or two I still miss Target. They have everything!

I've seen signs that there is one opening in Harlem near Costco. I don't know the planned opening date.

The problem is, how do you get all your shoppings home? Hopefully they will offer a delivery service.

I have a new appreciation for the suburban Target that is 5 minutes from my house. I'm adding that to my gratitude list today...LOL!

I'm not a fan of most things suburban, but Target is one of the few big-box stores that, quite simply, embodies happiness for me. Their workout clothes? Excellent. Their men's jeans selection? Delightfully fashionable. The ability to get laundry detergent, a new lamp, a television, frozen pizza, nail polish, and a bra all in one place? A-ma-zing. (oh, and their bras are the BEST. fact.)

My condolences. I, myself, am looking forward to an impending trip down the Summerland Aisle. I can't imagine what it must be like to only have the online site available and an inability to peruse the melamine plates, the pitchers, the matching beach umbrellas and coolers and deviled egg holders that make living in the burbs such a rich and privileged existence.

I would miss Target too! It’s one of the first places I visit when in America on hols!! You’re so right about the dollar bins and seasonal decs.

When I’m in NY I even visit the branch next to Woodbury Common – you can imagine how crazy people think I am!! My friends told me about a branch at Brooklyn that I’m planning to investigate on my trip in April and the others that commenters mention!

I went to Target on my lunch break, spent way too much money as usual!

You should try the one in Bronx. It the closet to suburban Target that I've been to in the 5 boroughs. It's right by Riverdale (B'way and 225). You can tke the 1 train there, but from UES, it's a super-fast cab ride. Best to go in the morning.

AND (bonus) there's a Marshall's next store. Great shoes.

If you didn't read my comment on the Blogess' site today, please do. Target and I had serious issues this afternoon. I love Target! I really, really do! But today at the pharmacy, I got more than just a little stressed out.
I actually have two comments on Jenny's blog today. The Target one is the second one, in the catagory of "Randon Crap"
Best personal regards,

you poor sweet thing. it's an obsession really.
i always have new things coming in and things to exchange. and liberty of london? loving it.
bUT ! you have enough there to far surpasas us here. bc/ as we all shop the asiles of needless stuff... there is a calling out to simplicity that we stuff down with candles, undies and 8dollar tees. then we come home and wish our house looked more like yours. so,.... remember. we all want to downsize- and you really have- and THAT is oh so much better than the plastic cups that liberty made that i think will make me "arrive" as the cool summer mom in suburbia.
:)

target.com may be your answer...I find things there that they don't have in the stores like a great little table I bought for the family room that will probably make the move to the apartment.

Hi, Michelle

As a former New Yorker who lived in Colorado (I'm now in Chicago and hoping to head back East), I've enjoyed your blog.

People have clued you in to the NY-area Targets. Im 2002, I bought a chair at the Target in Queens and took it home to Harlem on the subway. THAT'S a typical New York story.

About 10 years ago, Target docked a boat off of Chelsea Pier and set up a store on the water for Christmas. It was more fun than any suburban Target I have ever visited (and I've been shopping at Target since 1971 at the store in Lakewood, CO). If you prefer a suburban (vs. urban) Target, just go out to Long Island. There are several. Some are close to the LIRR.

Have fun!!

If you can deal with the crazy crowds with kids at easter parades and elephant walks, you can get on a 4 or 5 and go to Target in Brooklyn. Yes, they are often sold out of the good stuff, but I still go (plus, you can't beat the $4 prescriptions).
