As I mentioned in a previous post, Lily (age 6) sleeps in the dining room. Well, it's a dining room that's been converted into a bedroom. Something quite common in space-deficient NY apartments. She loves her little room and frankly, I do to. I thought I'd give you a detailed tour today. (Click on any photos to enlarge them.)
We finally have the doors up that separate her space from the family room. Thank goodness! I highly suggest having doors to your six year old's room unless you are the type that enjoys high levels of drama on a daily basis.
Come on in. She's at school right now, so she won't mind. Just don't touch anything, because she will lose her mind if you rearrange ANYTHING in her room. I know this from experience. Girl is very particular.
I made the pink silk taffeta drapes about six years ago. Definitely a splurge on the material, but they've lasted so long, it was worth it. They are held back by jumbo pink flowers. The pink toile upholstered glider I've had since she was a baby, but it transitions nicely into a big girl room. It is by far, the most comfortable chair in the house.
My sweet Aunt Kathy painted this beautiful picture as a baby gift for Lily. I love the special touch it adds to her room.
This is a handmade batiste dress that my mother made for me almost 40 years ago. The detail is amazing, and it looks so girly hanging in Lily's room even though she is too big to wear it anymore.
There is a collection of silver and pewter baby cups on this cute display shelf. (If my mother is reading this, she is also cringing at how tarnished the cups are. Sorry Mom!) I think I bought the shelf from Target. And I made a garland of family photos that I found in one of my grandmother's albums. The little girl with the heart on her dress is my grandmother. As you can see, I'm a tad sentimental when it comes to family.
The newest addition to Lily's room is this cherry blossom mural above her bed. (And guess what? I'm going to do a give-away on Thursday for this exact mural- make sure you come back and enter on Thursday!)
The white wicker dresser is a vintage piece I used for all my kid's rooms when they were babies. But since Lily is a girly-girl, she gets to keep it for a while longer. The rug is from Pottery Barn Teen. I made the upholstered headboard out of the same fabric as the glider. And you'll also notice the infamous doors I mentioned in another post that lead to the kitchen.
But the best part of Lily's room is the view. (And the fact that the window has safety bars on it.)
Would love to know what you think! And don't forget to come back Thursday for the give-away!

It's a room that any girl would love to have. You're so good at pulling everying together...always tasteful and nothing ever looks cluttered.
This is one of the most beautiful girl's room I have ever seen. It is also clear that Lily is treasured by her family. She is truly blessed!
i think i'd like to rent her room when i come to new york for a vacation :) love it all. so feminine and unique.
I love that it's so eclectic! Adorable:)
I love all of the natural light Lily gets in her room, which is gorgeous & timeless!
We converted our playroom into our boys room & it was without a door for a year; bedtime was a complete nightmare. They also have a door that leads to our laundry room, so they relate to Lily :)
Looks like it's straight from a magazine! You are so talented Michelle!
I want to know: do you have family members that give Lily big gaudy toys (i.e. Disney Princess Vanity, Barbie My-size throne, Butterscotch-an almost life-size pony that moves and responds to you, stuffed animals, etc...) I couldn't decorate Hannah's room like Lily's if I wanted to because she has all of these toys that clutter up her room! You can't trash them because it would break both Hannah's and her aunt/uncle/grandma's heart! Any advice?
Lily's room is beautiful, as is the view out her window! :) You've done a great job with the space. Do all of her clothes fit in that dresser? Or do you store some things elsewhere?
This room is so precious! I wish that I had a room like this when I was a little girl. I ended up sharing with my brother. We lived in a 3 bedroom town house and our older sister got dibs on her own room. I can't wait to decorate for my little ones in about 30 years!! :)
Oh by the way, I love the view. TO DIE FOR!
I love LOVE her room. The white with the pops of pink is just perfect!
Hi Christina- I've always had a large container in the bottom of Lily's closet. Since moving to NY- the closet is smaller, so the container is too, but it's the same concept. We always fill that container with "special" things that might not need to be displayed in the room. It's worked really well so far!
Hi Lisa- There's not a picture of the closet on this post, but she does have a little one. I keep all her hanging clothes in there and all her folded clothes, socks, underwear, etc...in the wicker dresser. Moving to a smaller space has really taught us that we don't need very many clothes anymore:-)
Loved this room, it's precious!
I think it looks beautiful....you are inspiring me in my current dilemma. I just need to sit with my options a bit longer. I love the soft pink curtains. Are they silk? Did you have them made? And they are the most lovely shade of pink. They add a perfect touch of pink to add to the dreamy white.
Let me know if you can about the curtains.....
I forgot to say that I LOVE the little painting too. What a charming and special gift to last a lifetime.
I want to have your decorator's "eye" when I grow up. I love how you put together things I would never think of and it looks so great. I also love how you blend a sense of family history into everything. Thanks for posting all the pics of your apartment...gives me a little michelle fix!
BTW...I'd like to state that I'm here early for Thursday's give-away...thinking about the early bird and the worm...just sayin...
I love love love her room. It's so girly but not overkill, in a classy girly way. She's a lucky girl!
3 Peanuts: The drapes are silk. I am definitely not a seamstress, but I did sew these myself. I just did a simple lining and and insert for the rod. Really easy to do.
I can't imagine waking up to a view like that! HOW exciting! I love all the girly touches to her room, very sweet.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!! It is a room that any little girl, including my adorable little 1 year old, would love to have!! Thank you for sharing!
Michelle,
I wanted to drop by to say hello and to thank you for visiting my blog today. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your wonderful stories...all the way back to Christmas.
Moving families IS such an adventure. We moved our family of 4 from Los Angeles to Lexington. A big change and a good one. It appears that your move has been a good one too. Your place is wonderful! I've never been in a NY high-rise apartment before...thanks for the tours. I look forward to visiting again soon and I love the name of your blog!
Lisa
Are you telling me you UPHOLSTERED the glider?! I guess, it wouldn't be at all surprising. When I was thinking about your cleansing move the other day, I wondered about your CRAFT stuff - didn't you have a garage full? What happened to all of it?
Hi Sohailah- I wish I could upholster furniture!
As far as my art studio....hold on let me grab a kleenex...most of the items were given away when we moved. I do have a few things in storage, but I just don't have a space to do projects like I used to.
What a beautiful room, I love everything about it including the stunning view! I could make out the Dakota buildings!
Claire....who is trying so hard not be extremly jealous!!! xx
It's absolutely adorable and is perfect for her. I remember seeing her nursery shortly after you guys adopted her and thinking how stinkin' cute all of the toile was and just how glamorously pink it was. It's neat to see how you've kept that same girly pink, but given it a 6-year old room's touch. You're just so talented!
Absolutely beautiful and decorated with so much love!
Beautiful, and I agree about that view! What a lucky girl!
Such a cute girly room! :) Just so you know - toothpaste (not gel) polishes silver sooo easily!
love the view and the room! very charming!
