it's snowing in manhattan right now

I just thought I'd tell you that. But that's not what this post is about.

I'm a big fan of neutral colors. They are calming - especially in the city. But I have to admit, that I always need a little color somewhere in my home to break it all up. I decided the hallway would be the perfect place to do this. Which hallway, you ask? THE ONLY ONE WE HAVE. It leads from the den to the master bedroom and the boys room.

Normally, Rod is the painter in our home. I don't pick up a paintbrush. I'm not allowed to. I am a rather impatient and messy painter. Imagine a monkey, who is also ADD, trying to paint his habitat. With his feet. That's what it looks like when I paint a room. It's not pretty, people.

But at the store the other day, I found this:

It looks amazing, right? Paint a room in under an hour? No more messy tape and lines? It makes painting look like a breeze. I bought it and tried it out.

THEY LIE.

Rod had to repaint the whole thing after my failed attempt.

The end result looks great. I love the color. It's moroccan spice from Benjamin Moore. And it matches the silk pendant I brought with us from our Colorado home.

The hall is filled with black and white pictures.

I would now like to take this moment to ask the universe when boys begin putting down the toilet lid?

Let me know what you think of the hallway. Do you add a punch of color somewhere in your home, too?

i love my paint store. they have all the fancy gadgets, but when i start drooling over them, they are quick to tell me that most don't work:0)

it looks lovely!

as for the punch of color...yeah, it's hidden nicely in my girls' room. every time i open the door, i'm punched with a bit of caribbean blue:0) i like to use pseudo-neutrals like grey blues & greens with my tans....

oh, and as for the monkey analogy...so it's kind of like watching curious george do art?

Every time I get tempted to try I get scared and stay neutral. I need an expert like you to tell me what to do.

I love color and was so happy to see that the previous homeowners of our house had great taste in color. Love your hallway. :-D

WOW! GREAT color! Love it, especially with the silk pendant and black and whites! Excellent!

Glad to know point and paint isn't worth the money. Won't even go there.

I LOVE the color! Excellent, bold choice. I too am not the painter in the house...

Your lease allows painting? I had never signed such a huge document,, except when we bought our house when I signed that lease document. Painting is NOT allowed. Nor are holes in walls. Of course, it's hard to put holes in concrete and steel! There are lots of other regulations too, but I won't bore you. I'm beginning to think that NY must have more lenient leases than CA.

Dkcody: Our lease does allow painting. I don't know what it's like in CA, but here we had to put down about 3 months worth of deposit just to be covered for incidentals. It's crazy. We are supposed to paint everything back to white and fill holes when we leave or else we will lose a big part of our deposit. And if we do any major construction, we have to fill more paperwork out to get permission and put down MORE deposit! I wanted to hire an electrician to come in and hang a new lamp over our dining table, but it was going to cost me about 700 dollars in a new deposit on top of what the electrician would charge me to do it. Needless to say, we eat by candlelight!

I agree, too about lease documents. It was actually harder for us to get a lease in NY than to buy our first home. And I'm quite sure the documents were larger. I couldn't believe it- all for a lease!

I love the color. Most of my very small home is Navajo White, but I, too, painted our hallway -- Pickle Green. The bathroom is a sunny yellow. I'm now thinking of changing the hallway to Moroccan Spice and don't think it'll "infringe" upon your territory as I live on the west coast. I love the color with the photos --

Beautiful color.

Your initial attempt reminded me of something: http://www.thebestlibrary.net/joomla/images/Birthtosix/cg-24_painting.jpg

Our deposit was minor, $500, mainly just to run a credit check and do the paper work. We also only had to pay a partial month's rent to get the keys and start moving in. I think, though, it was because of our credit rating. When the leasing agent called me, after running our credit, she was pretty amazed. Her words, "You have an amazing credit rating." Yeah, I thought, I haven't starting paying rent for a SF apartment! Does make me wonder what some of the other lessors' credit ratings look like. I have only seen two other couples our age in the building. Everyone is pretty much around 30. I just want to grab them and ask what kind of job they have to be able to pay the rent in this building. 8-)
